PEACE FRESNO PRESS CONFERENCE:
CONTINUED FUNDING FOR THE OCCUPATION OF IRAQ
December 28, 2007
11:30 AM
Fresno Center for Nonviolence, 1584 Van Ness at McKinley
President Bush lied to America and the world. We went to war and thousands of Americans and tens of thousands of Iraqis have died. For more than 5 years, Congress has had opportunities to stop this war but has failed. Last week, Congress could have stopped this war instead they included $70 billion for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in the $555 billion omnibus spending bill. This war money has no strings attached. Congress capitulated. Enough is enough!
Peace Fresno will hold a Press Conference on December 28, 2007 at 11:30 AM at the Fresno Center for Nonviolence, 1584 Van Ness at McKinley, in response to the passage and presidential signing of: 1) H.R. 1585 which, by a vote of 90-3 in the Senate and 370-49 in the House, voted to authorize $189 billion for the war, and 2) H.R. 2764 which, by a vote of 76-17 in the Senate and 272-142 in the House, appropriated $70 billion to continue the disastrous Occupation of Iraq. Senator Boxer, Representatives Costa, Nunes and Radanovich voted in favor of continued funding. Senator Feinstein was a non vote.
We will voice our disgust with a Congress that votes to continue the killing and maiming of Americans and Iraqis, the destabilization of the Middle East, and the increase of terrorism throughout the world. The U.S. military budget is equal to the military expenditures of all other countries in the world combined. It is time to begin the demilitarization of our country. We call on Congress to stand up to the Bush Administration, listen to the will of the American people, and end this war!
FYI, The Fresno Bee covered the press conference in the Local Briefs column, P. B4 in today’s paper, Dec. 29.
